WHAT DOES NOM-008-ENER-2001 CONSIST OF?
To regulate the characteristics of the building envelope throughout the country, the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE) has issued an Official Mexican Standard (NOM) on this subject:
NOM 008 ENER.- This Official Mexican Standard on energy efficiency in buildings in non-residential building envelopes talks about the thermal amount that a non-residential property, i.e., one that cannot be inhabited (hospitals, hotels, schools, offices, airports, among others) must have as a minimum, compared against a regulatory standard.
This standard exclusively regulates the building envelope. This is composed of all the elements of the construction that delimit the interior space of the building against the exterior, such as walls, doors, ceilings, windows, and floors. The building envelope acts as a shield from the sun, rain, and high or low temperatures outside to provide shelter and allow people to obtain a correct level of physical safety and thermal comfort.
HOW IS THE ENVELOPE INVOLVED WITH THE COMMON EXPENSE OF THE BUILDING?
One way to reduce investment and operating costs of this equipment is to incorporate an envelope that thermally insulates the building; in this way, the air conditioning system will work better. If the type of climate where a building will be developed is not considered, there will be a lack of comfort in the interior for the occupants, which will be transformed into higher energy consumption by resorting to additional air conditioning.
According to the CONUEE, approximately 30% of the total energy consumption is used for air conditioning, rising to 60% in places where high temperatures are present, such as northeastern Mexico.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BUILDING ENVELOPE IS EFFECTIVE?
An effective envelope equals or improves the conditions of the existing envelope compared to a stipulated base building. This comparison is made through an evaluation performed only by an authorized NOM Verification Unit.
A Verification Unit is an entity accredited by the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA) and by CONUEE that is recognized and authorized to evaluate NOM 008 ENER and NOM 020 ENER in any part of the Republic.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY ENVELOPE IS EFFECTIVE?
If a building complies positively with the evaluation of NOM 008 ENER, it receives an official report, which means that it limits the heat gain or loss in its interior and has a direct impact on the reduction of energy consumption by artificial air conditioning equipment.
